Penobscot 14
Sealer, Primer, Varnish and Paint Process
Hull interior: (transom, keel, stem, cap rail, rudder assembly, tiller and spars)
1. 3 coats of Pettit 2018 Sealer, sanded between coats; (220 grit) and ScotchBrite as needed in difficult areas.
2. 7-8 coats of Captains Z-Spar 1015 Varnish, 9 coats on seat tops. I Added small amounts of brushing thinner and Penetrol. Sanded between coats; (220 and 320 grit -final 2 coats) and ScotchBrite as needed in difficult areas.
3. After sanding between Sealer and Varnish coats, wipe with Pettit 120/T-10 Brushing Thinner. Once dry, carefully wipe with a Valspar Lilly Guardsman 236800 ULTIMATE DUSTR CLOTH. These cloths do not leave any residue and are washable.
I used Jen foam brushes from ACE Hardware for application of the Sealer and Varnish.
Hull exterior:
1. 3 coats of Interlux Interprime Sealer, lightly sanded (320) between coats.
2. 3 coats of Interlux Pre Koat white Primer, sanded between coats; (320 grit).
3. 4 coats of Interlux Brightside 4381 off white, sanded between coats, (320 grit). I thinned the Brightside slightly with Interlux 333 Brushing Liquid and added a small amount of Penetrol for a nice brush stroke free flowout.
4. After sanding between Sealer, Primer, and Paint coats, wipe with Interlux 333 Brushing Liquid. Once dry, carefully wipe with a Valspar Lilly Guardsman 236800 ULTIMATE DUSTR CLOTH.
I used Jen foam brushes from ACE Hardware for application of the Sealer and Primer. For the Brightside I used the roll and tip method of application. I used 7” Deluxe Mohair Rollers cut to about 3” in length to apply the Brightside and tipped with foam brushes. Periodically clean the paint out of the foam brush by brushing excess paint onto clean painter’s paper.

The Hull is then given 3 coats of Pettit Pre-Coat Primer sanded between each coat.
First coat sanded.
Here is the first coat of Interlux Brightside 4381 Off White.
Final coat of Brightside, for a total of 4. The mahogany badges are installed and the shear strake is painted with a custom green from George Kirby paint.
