17. Tiller Clutch by Harry Bryan

I made this tiller clutch/lock per plans from Harry Bryan in Wooden Boat Magazine issue 239 July/August 2014.  Also, take a look at Wooden Boat Magazine issue 215 July/August 2010 where Harry Bryan has a great article on silver soldering.
This Tiller Clutch works great, and has a very nautical wooden boat look and feel.  I used the cleats that were already on the cap rail to attach the control line.  I like to use the tiller clutch to lock the tiller when I push the boat off the trailer at the boat ramp.  It keeps the rudder centered nicely.  I will also engage the lock for a short time to tend to things or on a light wind day just to have a free hand to play my harmonica or eat a shack.
It was a fun winter project.  I did need to give Harry a call at one point because it seemed like the locking cam lever just would hold into the locked position.  I simply had to tighten up the cam lever pivot a little so that didn't move so freely on the pivot pin.
